Mustapha Kharbouch Brown University Shooting: Police release name of Brown shooter
Mustapha Kharbouch Brown University Shooting: Two students killed in a mass shooting at Brown University have been identified as the search for the gunman continues days after the attack.
Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov were fatally shot on Saturday when a masked individual dressed in black opened fire inside a lecture hall at the Holley Engineering Building on Brown’s campus in Providence, Rhode Island. Nine other people were injured in the incident.
Authorities initially detained a person of interest on Sunday but released the individual after determining there was no evidence linking them to the crime. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha stated that the investigation had shifted in a different direction.
On Monday, police released surveillance videos showing a person dressed entirely in black walking through nearby residential streets shortly before the shooting. The suspect remains at large, increasing anxiety within the campus and surrounding community.
The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said investigators are working urgently to identify and locate the suspect, though officials have not disclosed a motive or confirmed whether the victims were targeted or chosen at random.
Brown University cancelled all remaining in-person classes and exams for the semester, while some areas of campus remain restricted. Approximately 2,000 students were relocated to safe locations overnight, supported by local residents.
Ella Cook was remembered by peers and organizations for her leadership and kindness. Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an international student from Uzbekistan, was described by family as intelligent, compassionate, and aspiring to become a neurosurgeon. Leaders from the U.S. government, Uzbekistan, and the university expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
One injured victim remains in critical condition, while others are stable or have been discharged. The tragedy has brought the community together through vigils and memorials, even as the investigation continues and the suspect remains unidentified.
