Lynn Horiye San Mateo CA Obituary, Death: St. Francis High School gymnastics coach Lynn Horiye dies

It is with profound sadness that the community of San Mateo, California, mourns the passing of Lynn Horiye, a beloved educator and coach at Saint Francis High School. Coach Horiye, who retired last spring after nearly four decades of service, dedicated his life to teaching, mentoring, and inspiring generations of students and athletes.

His impact on the Saint Francis community, both on and off the gymnastics floor, will be remembered for years to come. Coach Lynn’s career in gymnastics was extraordinary. As head varsity gymnastics coach, he led his teams to 20 Central Coast Section (CCS) championships, becoming the winningest gymnastics coach in CCS history.

His guidance, encouragement, and expertise helped countless athletes develop not only their physical skills but also their confidence, resilience, and sportsmanship. Prior to his tenure at Saint Francis, Lynn coached at Kutsher’s Sports Academy, the Sunnyvale Gymnastics Club, and served as assistant girls gymnastics coach at San Jose State University, bringing experience and passion to every program he joined.

Beyond gymnastics, Coach Lynn played an active role in the broader school community. He coached JV and varsity girls tennis, supported the Dean’s Office, served as a prefect and substitute teacher, and kept stats for countless Lancer basketball and football teams.

His dedication to students went far beyond athletics; he was a mentor, a friend, and a source of encouragement to anyone who crossed his path. A native of Deweyville, Utah, Lynn attended San Mateo High School, studied at the College of San Mateo, and later at San Jose State University, cultivating a strong educational foundation that informed his approach to teaching and coaching.

Coach Lynn Horiye’s love for Saint Francis High School and the Brothers of Holy Cross was evident in every aspect of his work. His legacy of dedication, achievement, and genuine care for students and athletes will live on in the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by the school, his colleagues, his students, and the entire community.
